As part of our work at the Queenstown Electrification Accelerator, we’re looking for different ways to make electrification easier and cheaper. One way we’re doing this is by harnessing the community's collective purchasing power to get group discounts with installers.

That means we can offer you 10% off the retail price for solar installations from our partners if you live in the Queenstown Lakes District, Cromwell or Alexandra. Average pricing for these installers is ~$1,500-2,000 per kW installed, after discount. The current intake for these discounts closes on June 8, so feel free to register your interest. It's also important to note that signalling your interest does not lock you into a purchase.

How do I know if I should get solar?

What is a group discount programme?

By gathering a large number of people who are interested in solar, our installer partners can reach economies of scale to reduce product, marketing and sales costs. This allows them to offer discounts to our group during a time limited campaign.

How does it work?

Interested participants, both residential and commercial, can fill out the form to express interest. If you have a preference for one of the installers you can note that in the form. Next, the installer will contact you to gather some additional information and perform a site visit. They will then provide a quote and if approved schedule your installation.

The discount offer expires on 8th June so you need to sign up before then. Once you have been issued a quote, the discount is valid for 30 days.

We always recommend getting several quotes. You can request a quote from the second programme installer or identify other local installers online or the the SEANZ directory can be a useful tool.

Does QEA make any money off of this?

No, QEA is supporting this program as a benefit to the community. We do not earn any commission.

How did you select the installers?

We asked installers to respond to a Request for Information with information about their offer as well as requirements for experience, certifications, warranties and insurance.

Who can access the discount programme?

Residential homeowners or business owners in the Queenstown Lakes District, Cromwell and Alexandra.

What if I am a renter or landlord?

We have a programme for renters and landlords that enables the tenant to save money on their bills and the landlord make a return on investment, in addition to making the property more attractive for tenants. Sign up to learn more here.

I’m interested in solar, but should I add battery storage?

Solar provides your home with clean, renewable energy while shrinking your energy bills. Adding battery storage gives you greater control, convenience and peace of mind. It makes your home energy resilient. If there’s a power outage, solar energy stored in your battery can power essentials. It won’t power your whole house, but it can keep important things operating, like your lights, refrigerator or critical medical equipment.

If you are looking for back up power during an outage or are considering a battery, it’s important to let your installer know. Even if you do not install a battery right away, you will want to discuss options so that you have flexible equipment.
