Electrify your heating

Step by Step guide

Space heating in your home

Space heating and cooling accounts for around 30% of an average home’s energy use (excluding vehicles).

Switching from fossil fuel space heating to an electric heat pump is one of the most powerful actions you can take to cut energy bills, improve comfort, and reduce emissions.

Heatpumps use far less energy, run on clean electricity, and keep homes warm, dry, and healthy all year round. This guide walks you through the key information and the simple steps to get started.

LPG Heater - $4,500

Fossil fuel with high emissions
80% Efficient

Costs $2,440 per year to run

Heat Pump - $4,500

29 tonnes emissions avoided
300-400% Efficient

Costs $510 per year to run

Heat Pump Benefits

Convenient: No more LPG deliveries

Safe: No risk of leaks, fires or toxic gas poisoning

Cheaper to run: LPG prices are high and variable. Electricity prices are more stable.

Far lower emissions: Especially on renewable grid or solar.

Extra comfort: Can be used for cooling as well as heating.

Step by Step

1. Research

  • See how much you could save using Rewiring Aotearoa’s calculator.
  • Decide which rooms you want to heat.
  • Look into which system type suits your household (single-split system, multi- split system, ducted system).
  • Research heat pump installers online.
  • Shortlist three to contact for quotes.
  • Check out potential financing and grant options.

2. Get quotes

Ask three installers for quotes to include:

  • Recommendations for the system type, size and placement. Correct sizing is essential for performance.
  • LPG disconnection and capping.
  • Power supply for the heat pump unit (often a dedicated 10–16A circuit).
  • Warranty information.
  • Any switchboard or wiring upgrades (most homes won’t need this).

3. Install

  • Most installs take one day.
  • The electrician wires up the new circuit.
  • A plumber disconnects and caps the LPG.
  • The new indoor and outdoor units will be installed and system will be tested.
  • Your installer will teach you how to use and maintain the system optimally.
